The Chalice and Paten is for the newly ordained priest/minister, or for a wedding/commitment ceremony. I limit my ceramic color palette to muted, quiet colors for this form. The color combinations I prefer is creamy white outside, with either green/blue inside, or blue/black inside, or glossy white inside. The creamy white can vary from subtle matt to a slight gloss depending on the colors of the inside glaze. Pictured here is the creamy white with green/blue inside.
I have been making this form for years… it is a favorite of mine… a difficult and challenging form to make. It is thrown on the potters wheel in one piece so the form is not disrupted by a break line were the cup meets the stem. I want this form to speak of transcendence, and not purely a focus on the object itself. I want it to be grounded yet lead your eyes upward.
With all of the design perimeters I set for myself the finished product must also be balanced, light, and easily passed from one person to another in the public setting.
