I create beautiful custom biodegradable urns. I am happy to work with you using my knowledge of pottery form and function, along with your ideas for colors, photos, poems, etc.. This is about you and how you want to remember your loved one. I will happily work with you, but just know the work I make reflects my style as an artist/potter. Another words please do not ask me to do something totally out of my realm, like making a guitar, fire truck, or other sculptural pieces. If you choose to work with me, the process will take up to six weeks, and prices will vary on size of the urn. The price quoted here is for an individual urn, (220 cubic inches). Smaller urns will cost less, depending on the amount of detail.
Biodegradable Clay Urns are made from recycled clay blended thoroughly with recycled paper pulp. This combination of clay and paper pulp make for an extremely strong bond which acts like woven material when the clay is wet. As the fiber and clay dry it becomes extremely hard and durable, (think gauze covered paper mache… strong like a gosh darn Piñata, but even thicker!) The urn is not fired in a kiln, therefore can degrade naturally when it is put into a body of water. This also allows me to decorate the urn quite differently then if the urn were fired in a kiln and glazed.
These urns are 100% biodegradable. Each urn takes many hours to create. They are made by my hands, with love and care. The patterns and colors are cut out from paper which I hand-paint using soy based biodegradable paints. I choose materials that are from the earth and will naturally return to the earth. Some of the urns include yarns, or threads which are also biodegradable. Some of the urns have found materials that are gathered from the woods, fields, and garden. I use pine needles, leaves, seeds, wildflowers, and grasses… all leaving their mark on the urn.
The urn can be placed in a body of water and will degrade within a few hours, or it can be buried and will eventually degrade naturally. If you choose to keep the urn until family decisions are made they are durable enough to stay on a shelf for years to come.
Each urn is truly one of a kind, therefore quite individual.
“Green Burial” goes hand in hand with a life well lived on this earth. The good earth has given us so much; why not give ourselves back to the earth “naturally”.
Measures. 7″ W x 10″ L x 9″ H and will hold 220 cubic inches**.
