Butter Keeper or Butter Dish

What’s the difference between a butter dish and a butter keeper? I get asked this question so often.

Also who says a butter dish has to be long and narrow to fit a stick of butter?

The first two photos show butter dishes freshly made. The second photo shows the inside dish where the butter is placed. (I like to soften a stick of butter before I put it in and squish it down to fit the cup part of the dish).

The third photo shows butter keepers drying for the next bisque firing. Butter keepers allow you to store butter at room temperature for up to two weeks. They work best with a flat top because that’s the section that holds the butter and is flipped over for serving. The bottom part of the butter keeper stores the water. You put the top cup filled with (squished in)butter upside down into the water. By doing this you can keep your butter on the counter and it is sealed in the cool water.

Some people just leave their butter dishes out on the counter anyway because they use it so quick. But if you want to keep your butter on the counter for a longer period of time you’re better off using a butter keeper… plus they make a great conversation piece!

I will have all of these for the Asparagus Valley Pottery Trail, April 30 and May 1.

We will be having an online version of the pottery trail on April 29 at 12 noon. Find out more here!
