What is a Pottery Seconds Sale
A pottery seconds sale for me is about making pottery available to people of all socioeconomic backgrounds. Handmade pottery takes a lot of time to make, therefore can be quite expensive to purchase for many people. I sell my seconds at 25%-75% off my regular prices. In selling my seconds I am able to get handmade pottery into the hands of more people. Even if it’s only one little special bowl- that little bowl just might have the potential to bring a little joy to that person each day.
So what is a pottery second? For me a second is when my pottery does not pass my strict test to be sold as a first. Basically a pottery second has slight imperfections, it may have a few glaze flaws, tiny pinholes, blemishes, or glaze drips. It may be that a color did not come out as intended. It may just be that a glaze was an experiment that I didn’t care for. Sometimes a lid may not fit tight enough for my standards. There are many reasons. It also may be that a piece hasn’t sold and sits on my shelf for too long - I need to make room for new work.
My seconds will not be heavy, clunky pottery. My seconds will not have cracks making it unsafe to use. (When I make things that bad I really don’t want my name on it)! Pottery like that will end up in the shard box which is destined for sidewalks and mosaics!
So stop by my studio for a Pottery Seconds “Yard” sale this Sunday, 10am-4pm (which is the rain-date as Saturday is predicted storms). I’ll have tables in front of the studio with all the proper precautions for social distancing. There will be opportunity for two people at a time to shop in the studio for first quality pottery as well!
Don’t forget it’s Tax Free Weekend in Massachusetts!
